The orginal to all these versions is likely Waly Waly, aka The Water Is Wide, which appears in Ramsay (1727), and as Jamie Douglas (Childe 204).

The original(?) box verse might be

O had I wist, afore I kissed,
That love wad be sae ill tae win,
I had lockit my heart in a kist o' gowd/stane,
And pinn'd it close wi' a siller/gowden pin.
