Those are all interesting links, but Kendall, it seems, is wanting to help Gordon find a poem source for the song...a potential author, if it exists. I haven't found one either, but there might be a lead in poetry collections in book form. All of my books burned up; perhaps someone who has books of poetry or library access will be able to do some sleuthing.

999's link leads to a version cited as:
"VERSION 4: Titled: "Twenty, Eighteen",
Source: Broadwood, L, 1893, English County Songs, London, Leadenhall Press"

So the Lucy Broadwood 1893 reference is the earliest dated version I've seen here so far. Can we find anything earlier, in song or poem form?
