Indian boarding schools, at which native languages and customs were forbidden, were maintained by both Catholic and Protestant orders, in both the U. S. and Canada, as well as by the governments. The object was to, as much as possible, turn the Indian into a white clone. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Pennsylvania, a boarding school, was considered to be an especially fine place to turn Indians into an approximation of white men.
