Re my phonetic pronunciation attempt above, I could certainly have slightly misheard it and missed the consonant - it was in a pub with a load of people singing the chorus so perhaps either the syllables or my brain got a bit blurred. Your suggestion makes perfect sense.

Wonder if this is a genuine old song or something from the pen of a songwriter...?
