I don't believe for a moment that the USA or any of the western governments give a fig about establishing real democracy in ANY part of the Third World. That's just media propaganda for the western population. What western governments want in those countries is obedient client regimes who will cooperate with western strategic and business interests, allow western military bases on their land, and hand over their national resources at a price acceptable to the USA and Nato.
They also want to dominate the Third World and shut out the Russians and Chinese from doing the same. It's colonialism, in truth, but not official and open colonialism, as that is not acceptable anymore in the post-WWII age.
It's the Great Game all over again, as it once was between Great Britain and Imperial Russia, and the real long range opponents in this new version of the Great Game are Russia and China.
The West will happily work with Muslim fundamentalists any time they can arrange it to their mutual satisfaction. They have done so in the past....and doing so (in Afghanistan) was a vital factor in bringing down the Soviet Union in 1989.
But Israel is a wild card in that scheme. The degree of smouldering anger in the entire Muslim world against Israel, and against the USA for shamelessly backing and promoting Israel in virtually any and all circumstances is growing more dangerous with time, not less. That is the wild card that could cause the Great Game to turn into a truly deadly one, and release the nuclear genie from his bottle. If it does, I fear that Israel (and the USA) will be the ones to open that bottle, and that Iran will be the target.
