Steak and kidney pie. Lamb's kidneys and fairly inexpensive casserole beef. The best thing is not to add a load of fancy ingredients. Just chopped onion, salt and pepper. Casserole the meat and kidneys for long enough to make them tender (about 2 hrs). Thicken with Bisto gravy powder (not the granules, horrid stuff, the original powder) Allow to cool. Make the pastry with a mixture of plain and self-raising flour (about twice as much plain to SF) And use LARD (Gasp! Horror! Cholesterol!) and margarine, half fat to flour. Roll it quite thick. Make the pie up, saving most of the gravy, seal the lid with milk. Cook quite slowly for 40 minutes. Use the gravy for the meal, on top of the spuds and vegetables. It's nice cold too.
