I should add, as I've mentioned in another thread (but who bothers to read what people have already said?), that your best bet for an ebook reader for non-proprietary (non-Kindle, non-Nook) books is probably an iPad. (Disclaimer: I don't have one and haven't used one.) The device has a much bigger reading screen and is designed to present web pages in a compact format, so all the zooming issues have been well-explored and accommodated. Ebook readers are popular apps for them, and they can do SO much more (including access online ebook converters and use web-based ebook browsers at online book repository sites). My Nook was a present last year--I would have preferred a Kindle--but nowadays something like an iPad strikes me as a better option, for public domain and user-generated PDFs and ePub documents. I refuse to buy anyone's proprietary books (buy now, use only on certain devices, unusable ten years hence, non-transferrable or donatable--you don't really OWN anything) as long as trusty paper is available.
