Re pdf conversion: It sounds like the same sort of conversion that archive.org do; they generate mobi files with OCR text and the music lines become garbage. I tried a stand-alone conversion program (Calibre) too, which generated mobi with the same results. It means staying with pdf for the books with music in them (the ones that are text only should be ok - as good as the OCR anyway).

I think that comes from the pdf properties. (The kindle can also retrieve book information from amazon's servers). I don't think you can alter it on the kindle, but there are utilities that will let you edit the pdf properties before you load it.
