I was once asked to do the music for a pantomime, and the opening number was "Do You Believe in Magic" by Loving Spoonful. To get the right sound for the intro chords, I played around with string gauges, different pickups, plectrum thickness and amp settings for weeks. I ended up by converting a Hofner 175 (one of the red vinyl covered, strat-shaped, ones) just to play that song.
I'd nearly got it right when I happened to see a video of the band playing that song.
John Sebastian was playing an electric autoharp.
