Hawaiian carpenters built Fort Langley, British Columbia, their blacksmiths produced metal products such as nails, and they worked the farm and the fisheries.
A Hawaiian staple, lomi lomi was based on salmon shipped to the Islands in casks.
mg makes points about those who worked on the "American" side of the border (which was not yet established); I will have to do some more reading. I remember reading about their work checking accuracy of pile-driving at Fort Vancouver, WA.

I spent a day reading in the Royal Hawaiian archives in Honolulu, lists of those contracted to work with the Bay Company. The papers provided for for their return after a specified period. The Hudson's Bay Company store in Honolulu was large, selling necessities from food to lumber.
