Edmund and I are both great fans of Nigel Molesworth (as any fule kno), and I was brought up on "Souls in Torment", the first St. Trinian's collection. I thought his illustrations for "The Great Fur Opera", the tercentenary history of the Hudson's Bay Company, were among his most amusing work (see some of them here; note especially "How to Make a Beaver Hat" about halfway down the page).
More than anything, his cartoons convey scorn for those who go through life suffering from a desperate need for grandeur and delusions of adequacy.
