Subject: RE: Obit: Ronald Searle (St Trinians creator)-Dec 2011
Ronald Searle became part of our wedding ... when we were sorting out invitations we didn't want the conventional images of bells and stuff, but I found a postcard I'd bought in France which featured two of Searle's rather amorous cartoon cats, in a beautiful pose, and we thought that would be ideal. But being very alert to copyright issues we wanted to do the right thing, and I did some research to find out where Searle was living. Eventually I discovered an article that said he was in France, and enough clues to locate the right departement and village. So I sent a letter through the post, addressed to him (in French) as the famous illustrator, asking for his permission to use the image on our invitations. Almost by return I had a note from him, enclosing a pristine postcard of the same image, giving us his blessing to use the image and wishing us every joy. Still brings a lump to my throat and I'm so sorry he's now gone.
