BS stands for Below the Salt. In the days when Mudcat was just beginning, many of the songs posted were about the sea and ships and sailing and shanties (chanties for your American cousins). As I heard it from some trusted people, Spaw got outrageous and talked the way he does and the thread deteriorated in quick order. He was banished for a day to the BS section which didn't exist, so Pene, Joe and Max started it. Thus the term BS--or Below the Salt. Trust me on this, Eliza. That's the way it was.
