JOE

By: Dixie Hall (BMI)
Tom T. Hall (BMI)

Verse 1: I remember the day as we all knelt to pray
He came into the church and sat down
When the service was through like all visitors do
He ate dinner with us on the ground
For years he hung out at our small country church
He would welcome each one who came in
Sometimes our attendance was more to see Joe
Than being forgiven of sin

Verse 2: It didn't cost much to take care of Joe
Just a warm place to sleep and a meal
And he gave his love to the whole congregation
It was a remarkable deal
He listened to all of our dreams and our troubles
Then after we left to go home
He'd wander on down to the old cemetery
To sit with the one's who'd passed on

Verse 3: We dug the hole deep when ole Joe went to sleep
And we cried as we laid him to rest
Now we know among reasons for going to heaven
To see him is one of the best
We buried him here with the people he loved
It seemed like the right thing to do
We all prayed about it, and reached the conclusion
The good lord loves beagle hounds…too
