In the 1950's only homosexuals crossed their legs in public, were seen reading poetry, or wore a wrist watch, or a white roll neck sweater with suede shoes. Talc and deoderant were pretty suspect as well - I can remember the girl at our local corner shop wondering to my Mum if her boyfriend was a little bit of a fanny for wearing aftershave.
