JohnInKansas - Yes, of course, in a 4-party system, for example....the majority of people won't get the candidate they wanted no matter who gets elected! ;-)
But that's not the point when it comes to Canada. The point in Canada is this: Only about 40% of the public can be termed "conservative" in their general political and social outlook. The other 60% can be considered "liberal" in their general outlook.
That's very different from the USA! The USA has a population far more inclined toward conservatism.
Okay. Now we have only 1 really conservative party in Canada. It is called the Conservative Party of Canada.
We have several other parties (Liberals, New Democrats, Greens, Bloc Quebecois), and they are all essentially somewhat liberal (with some degree of variance in how liberal). They represent various sectors of the 60% of the public I was referring to above.
The 40% of the public that is basically conservative in outlook are represented by ONE rightwing party, the conservatives.
That ONE party has won the last couple of elections by virtue of the fact that the 60% of the public who aren't conservative are dividing their votes between 4 different parties!
And the Conservatives got a majority in the last election because of that, despite having support of only about 4 out of 10 people in the country.
That is unjust. It's wrong. It's unacceptable. It can only be stopped if the various non-conservative parties in this country swallow their stupid pride, put aside their differences, and unite into a single centre-left party under a single name.
I suggest "Liberal Democrats", and I wish they would do it without delay. If they did, the Conservatives would be voted out in the next election, and we'd have a government that does represent a true majority for a change.
