LH, you're forgetting a few things.

First, the average German soldier wasn't stupid -- stupid doesn't work in war. German forces were massed along the Polish border prior to the German excuse for Sept. 1, 1939.

Second, soldiers don't fight for a cause. They may enlist for a cause but they fight for their lives and the lives of their buddies. This is brought home the first time a bullet goes "CRACK!" by your ear or you see the guy next to you blown up, shot down, burned alive, bayoneted, or in other was rendered dead, dead, dead or turned into a living wound with his or her jaw shot away, intestines hanging out in the dirt, stumps for legs.

Thirdly, the human race in general is very good at killing. From punji sticks to nuclear weapons. The most common military rifle in the world is the AK-47 -- from the Soviet Union, not the US. Probably the most used sidearm caliber is 9mm Parabellum -- from Germany. The British Square, the Greek Phalanx, Greek Fire, Swiss Pikemen...you can continue the list.
