Thread Name: Dick Miles, Just as the tide
Subject: RE: Dick Miles, Just as the tide
to tell us all the people who recorded just as the tide, without giving audio samples is pointless, I included the other good version[ paley and seeger]
Shirley's version, well performed, but a fragment,Raises a point which I think is worth discussing, would she have been better off adding verses from another version and adapting them to her tune, rather than singing two verses, because that was the way her relative always sang it.
Which reminds me of Gamekeepers lie Sleeping,MOST OF THE TIME a meaningless fragment as recorded by most traditional singers, the exception being Bob Roberts, who IMO, wrote some of his version, does it matter,no, because he has improved the song, and because traditional songs are there to be altered, that is part of their nature.
if we are going to talk about the song JUST AS THE TIDE let us discuss its substance, or its possible date of origin, but pleases spare us the train spotter stuff of which revival or traditional singers sang it, unless audios can be supplied at the same time, if there is a version of Harry Cox singing it , can we please hear it, otherwise IMO its meaningless.
