Actually, I've never used one. We were at a place in France that had one but I never used it.

Sponges on a stick (what a name for a new candy or ice cream!) were used by the Romans way back when. Maybe that's where the expression "shit on a stick" comes from. I know where "shit on shingle" comes from.
