It doesn't matter that his apology isn't sincere. Everybody knows that. What's important is that it shows he can be humbled rather than forcing everybody else to be humbled by him. Once he saw his advertisers leaving and none jumping in to take their place, he HAD to apologize.

It could lead to a loss of audience for him because they won't like the fact that he apologized--especially if it was just to keep his corporate sponsors. They've always loved his complete refusal to be humbled or to admit he was wrong. To see him get down on one knee makes them wince. You know it makes him wince. This may be the small leak that sinks the big bloated ship.
