Montreal Smoked Meat is just across the street and five buildings down from Schwartz's. I ate there about four months back. It is easier to get into and imo better than Schwartz's (the quality seems to have dropped since THAT was sold about 1 1/2 years ago). However, equally good is Smoked Meat Pete's out on the West Island. Smoked Meat Pete is related to the owner of the former owner of MSM, and they use similar recipes. I do not know that the smoked meat sold across Canada is part of the same family, but Schwartz's, Dunn's, Ben's and Mtl Smoked Meat are the restaurants that made smoked meat famous in this country. As for take-out: if ya saw the parking problems in that section of Montreal, ya'd understand. The city itself is fucked up big time because it is always, and I mean always having road work done and finding a free parking spot can take 30 minutes or it will be seven blocks away or both.
