Kat, you're probably seeing a dog in search of reassurance and a pack leader. The crate may well be a good option, but do you put these dogs on leashes and walk them them way Cesar Millan shows (with the dog beside you, not out front?) Even if it is a short walk, and you do one dog at a time for them to each get the message, this is an excellent way to establish who is in charge. Also, at mealtime I put the food on the floor but the dogs sit and wait until I tell them they can eat. Then they know who's in charge - because I control the food. Building that routine and hierarchy is important with dogs.
