Thread Name: Lyr Req: Canadian Irish Songs
Subject: Lyr Req: Canadian Irish Songs
Well I'm on here I may as well leap out and ask
Does anyone know of any songs or poems in Irish composed in Canada? I am certain these must have existed, they would not have gone for 200+ years without making some songs, but unfortunately most to all have been lost with the language (and the lack of literacy). One Gael in Canada presaged this when he said "What will happen to our songs and poems when we have lost our language?" Well, unfortunately we found that out the hard way.
I have collected a scant few relating to Canada, and some references to others, but my search has been hindered by the fact that Canada, Britain, and most speakers in the 1700's-1800's didn't think Irish G. was different from Scots G., so they are all lumped together in the archives. That and I'm guessing 99.9% of them would have been discarded with the language.
Anyone have any leads?
