Santorum is not needed since Gingrich and Paul can carry on the internal destruction of the Repuglicans and pushing Romney to the unelectable right.
The loss of Santorum reduces the risks posed by state legislatures to, in particular, women's rights (vide the "Planned Fuck Law" as above, and the "Women are Cattle Law" elsewhere.
