Eliza... the choice of a late night snack matters. If you ever take a diabetes course you will understand that eating something "healthy" at about 10PM saves your liver from "overworking" around 3AM. This also helps sleeping soundly during those last hours. My choice is cracked wheat toast with peanut butter and a MINIMAL amount of water. I prefer beer but I would not recommend it.
