Thread Name: Happy Birthday Pete Seeger
Subject: RE: Happy Birthday Pete Seeger
The LOC American Folklife Center posted this on Facebook:

It's Pete Seeger's ninety-third birthday! As a teenager, Seeger was the first intern at the Archive of Folk Song, which is now the AFC Archive. Later, he went on to have number-one hits with The Weavers, and to become a leading light of the American folk revival, the Civil Rights movement, and the environmental movement. He has maintained a relationship with the Archive and Center all these years, crediting us as the source of many of his songs, donating some of his collections, and visiting us from time to time. In 2007, AFC organized a symposium honoring the Seeger family for their contributions to the Library and to American culture. It included two concerts, one in the Library's Coolidge Auditorium and one in nearby Silver Spring, MD. The concerts turned out to be the last time Pete played with his half-siblings, Mike and Peggy, before Mike died in 2009. AFC maintains a substantial site dedicated to the symposium, including webcasts of all the panels and the Coolidge concert, resource lists of Seeger materials at the Library, schedules, and a photo album. Please explore the site and wish one of our oldest friends a very happy birthday!
