Well, it's not purposeless fiddling, but following scientific convention on naming taxons. Apatosaurus was discovered first, fossils discovered later were assigned to Brontosaurus and further study revealed the remains were actually Apatosaurus.Therefore Brontosaurus doesn't exist in effect, and the name is a junior synonym of the original Apatosaurus, which quite rightly is what the animal is called. This was first pointed out around 1903.

As for the dino fart theory, that seems (although I haven't read the paper) a load of crap. Ta boom!
