Thread Name: A Ghost Story
Subject: RE: A Ghost Story
I took what Amos posted seriously. I think he expressed it extremely well. Not that I'm saying it must be so...but it may be so. I see no reason to hold either form of fundamentalist belief, meaning:

fundamentalist belief # 1: There definitely ARE ghosts and disembodied spirits. Only a fool would think there were not.

fundamentalist belief # 2: There definitely ARE NO ghosts and disembodied spirits. Only a fool would think there are.

Either of the above is a rigid, dogmatic, faith-based belief...not backed up by conclusive evidence of any kind or by experience, but by a set of preconceived and absolutely rigid assumptions which the fundamentalist would NOT dream of questioning.

That's how fundametalism works. ;-) Whether it's religious fundamentalism or "scientific" fundamentalism. (I put the quotes around scientific in this case, because such mental rigidity really has no place in good science...good science doesn't categorically deny things it doesn't like...it continues to look into them in an open-minded fashion, and continues to seek new information.)

So I'm saying that IF there are, in fact, ghosts, then what Amos said about them in connection with projecting psychic holograms was quite well put.

And I don't know if there are, in fact, ghosts. But there may be. I have no way of being certain either way about it. I haven't seen absolutely conclusive evidence either for or against the notion of ghosts.

Therefore for me it remains hypothetical, same as reincarnation, life after death, God, Angels, extraterrestrial spacecraft, a Democratic Party organization (at the top levels) that actually means and believes in what its leaders say publicly, a Republican Party that isn't ethically virtually insane, etc.....

All these are hypotheticals. ;-) Some of them may be true. We shall have to await further evidence before making a final decision...unless we're fundamentalists! If we are, then all our decisions have already been made.
