Doc Watson's family was called to his bedside Sunday after he took a turn for the worse, his manager said.
"Doc did have a pretty difficult day today," Mitch Greenhill, Watson's manager, said in the evening. "But he pulled through."
Watson remained in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson said.
Watson, 89, had surgery Thursday to remove a blockage in his colon. He remains in the hospital's intensive care unit.
His management company, Folklore Productions International, had posted an update Saturday that he had undergone a follow-up procedure to Thursday's surgery.
Watson, who was born in Deep Gap and is blind, is known as a master of the flatpicking style of guitar playing. He has won eight Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts and a National Heritage Fellowship.
Watson has also played at Carnegie Hall and on the lawn of the White House.
He started MerleFest, an annual gathering of musicians in Wilkesboro named after his son, who died in a tractor accident in 1985.
