I fully agree, by the way, that the Vietnam vets were treated in a very shabby way. That's because the war was seen as an embarrassment and a national failure, and people wanted not to even think about it in the years closely following the final withdrawal of the American forces there. There was a lot of denial going on. That tends to happen in the wake of a lost war. People want something they can celebrate. When they don't get it, they can turn kind of nasty.
