In Tescos UK, if you buy clothes (eg a shirt) and use the automatic checkout, it comes up as 'assistance needed' because the clothes have a security tag attached. The assistant comes along and removes it. Maybe the Shirt Incident was something along those lines, Dave? I once bought a skirt there and used the normal checkout. The checkout lady forgot to take off the tag, and of course the alarm sounded as we left the store. I was petrified and the Guard came racing up. As we had the receipt, it was ok. But I hate it when that happens, people turn and look and you imagine them saying "That woman looks shifty, I bet she's a shoplifter!".
