At least now I have the time to undo Tom's boot/brace, rub either Amerigel or vitamin E oil into his leg twice a day (and let his leg breathe for 15 minutes each time) as per doctor's orders. Before I suddenly retired, that was the care that, in actuality, just ended up being "too much" and is probably what kicked me into investigating and signing up for social security three years before I intended to.
