Yeah, we out here in SE Idaho knew about the sketch before it appeared. The "reporter" was asking a lot of people to comment. Yeah, too much selenium (or anything else) is bad for Nature and for you personally.

Oh, yeah -- the local municipal water supply is okay. The selenium content is a maximum of 3.0 ppm and upper EPA limit is 50 ppm. There's also 1.82 ppb of uranium, the EPA standard is 30 ppb. I don't think, or suggest, that the guy was drinking water straight out of the river -- giardia (a/k/a "The Beaver's Revenge") is unpleasant.
