Obama used Republican ideas to reform health care for two reasons, he is a fiscal conservative, he knew that Democratic party ideas would not fly. Reform had to be done. I think he also thought that the GOP might support their own ideas. But the GOP Senate leader's number one objective was making Obama a "one term President." so the process was a lot harder and divisive than it should have been. Health care reform had to happen. Whatever the GOP would have done or will do will look a lot like the Affordable Care Act. Keep in mind that the Health Care Providers and Insurance companies were consulted and supported the passing of the law.   Republican objections to the law are almost entirely political.
