Thread Name: Categories of Irish Music
Subject: RE: Categories of Irish Music
At the risk of stating something Ye Auld Folkes might know already, Early irish laws recognized three "official" catagories of music in terms of the the intent or effect of each one: music for inspiration and inciting, music for lamentation or mourning, and music for soothing or healing. These were the types of music a professional musician was hired to create/perform. If you pair these catagories of music up with the legal lists of officially-recognized types of poetry, i.e. satire, praise-poems, etc., I suspect you'd have a very workable short list. Sorry to frump about with ancient history in the midst of your whimsical ramblings, but perhaps the next contributor could set us giggling again? Or someone who remembers the bardic work catagories could fill in a bit more of the gap...

Gabh spòrs,
