Wallace ran as the American Independent Party candidate in '68, on a platform of keeping the niggers down, and took 46 electoral votes. In '72 he went back to the Democrats, won the Michigan Democratic primary in a landslide, got shot. He was never a Republican.

The speculation has been that Nixon ordered the shooting -- Wallace was his only real threat, in that he siphoned off the nigger-hater vote that Nixon desperately courted.
