I have a theory ( I have lots of them!) that blues singers, who developed their style without the use of a microphone, have a different approach than those who were brought up singing into a mic.
I prefer the ones who fall into the former category e.g. Son House and Skip James.
Muddy Waters falls into both categories!
But I much prefer his early recordings rather that the recordings he made using his "microphone voice".
