I wish that the "debates" were actually DEBATES and not simply candidates echoing and re-echoing their previous statements and/or the party line.

Give them a topic -- something stated like, "Resolved: The US Should Remove All Its Troops From Overseas By The End Of 2014" -- and let them actually make their statements and then rebut each other. Let the listener decide who they, the listener, "won."
