Interestingly, Wallace himself was not a "nigger hater", and as I recall was actually rather progressive on the race issue at the beginning of his political career. But after getting soundly defeated in some election, he commented about his opponent, "He out-niggered me, boys," and adopted a racist stance. Sadly, it proved very effective in ensuring victory in subsequent elections.
