Sounds like an excellent way to while away a few hours. It's really amazing at times just how things can come together with a group of people that you haven't previously met and it works. I have had this experence a few times over the years although I must admit that my musical ability is not as wide and accomplished as yours.
I would say that you don't necessarily have to live in an urban area in the States to find sessions. In the tri-state area of North Western North Carolina, South West Virginia and East Tennessee there are a number of sessions that go on all the time. Many regular and many informal. I do realise that this area is exceptional but I feel sure there are other rural areas that are similar - in the South anyway.
