DougR, jeez -- when I said "the speculation has been", I meant exactly that. It was indeed common speculation at the time.
The sources of the speculation about the Wallace shooting were maybe a bit more mainstream than Hollowfox remembers -- in particular, a Woodward and Bernstein story on a peculiar bit of testimony from Howard Hunt. Hunt testified before the Senate that Colson, on the night of the Wallace shooting, had ordered him to break into Bremer's apartment and "make it look like the commies did it". Colson denied giving Hunt the orders. The matter wasn't pursued, and became just another loose end in the Watergate investigation, but it raised the obvious questions -- and, of course, the Nixon burglars were no strangers to assassination plots. If you recall Dean testified that at one point Hunt was ordered to assassinate the president of Panama. This isn't "conspiracy theory", it's just public record, as was Nixon's anxiety about losing the bigot constituency to Wallace.
Hence the rumor (there were other sources, I gotta get back to work, but if you're still curious that should give you enough to go on -- nope, I don't have any theories on the JFK assassination.)
