Thread Name: Cold Comfort Farm
Subject: RE: Cold Comfort Farm
No-one seems to have mentioned thruout this thread [or did I miss it?] the sub/post-Hardyesque novels of Mary Webb, such as Precious Bane [1924 - revived by tv in 50s-60s?], much admired and prize-winning back then, but whose emotive bucolic imagery &c soon fell out of fashion: thanks largely to Stella Gibbons' parody, Cold Comfort Farm which "parodies the romanticised, sometimes doom-laden accounts of rural life popular at the time, by writers such as Mary Webb" - wiki.

An interesting instance, like many of Lewis Carroll's mock-Wordsworthian or Isaac·Wattsian nonsense poems, of parodies which have enough intrinsic quality to have outlived the originals.
