One of MY ancestors (around 1855) told his sister that he helped slaves escape from the South, cross the Ohio into Illinois, and then take the across the Mississippi and sold them back into slavery in Missouri.
I'm not particularly proud of him, but then that was 90 years or so before I was born. Frankly, I don't really care -- after he told his sister this story he was never seen again.
I think that if you checked your own mitochondrial DNA you'd find all SORTS of "racial" background...assuming you're a member of the human race.
