Subject: RE: BS: Curmudgeon, Back On His Feet Again
The past month has been uneventful...and that's a GOOD thing!

Bart, Tom's physical therapist from Visiting Nurses comes twice a week and makes him work or, at least, give's Tom direction and exercises. Tom is pretty focused on becoming more mobile.

He's still using the wheelchair around the house, at the table and between the table and the computer, the table and kitchen, the table and his bed on the couch. But he's not only progressed out of the wheelchair and into a walker to go outside and to the car for doctors' appointments and The Press Room, but he's now using the walker only for exercises...he's walking with the cane only outside of the house.

So Tom can go out on the deck by himself and also be able to control the radio, etc. inside and stand up to do some things in the kitchen. He still needs help seeing things so still hasn't taken over the bulk of the cooking duties, but today he was able to go inside the grocery store for the first time in five months. He got around in one of the motorized carts while I walked next to him and also made excursions to get things in aisles that were more crowded. Reminded me by the time we finished that I really need to be able to hang onto a cart while moving around the store.

About three weeks ago Tom had the final fitting for his new dentures and today went in to get the finished product and make the initial fitting tweaks. We've got an appointment to see Dr. Harvey on Wednesday for further fine tuning after wearing them for a couple days.

So this is truly a progress report on several fronts -- progress is definitely continuing to be made and Tom's in a heck of a lot better shape than he was a month ago.

And I've survived the past three weeks, too -- through adverse effects of a wasp sting, allergic reaction to the antibiotic prescribed for the wasp sting, AND the nasty side effects of the prednisone prescribed to counteract the allergic reaction. Arghhh! I've come full circle and am back to whatever passes for "normal", while Tom, on the other hand, has continued to improve.

I think, too, that, thanks to the physical therapy and workouts to just move around, Tom is in better physical shape than he was before he broke his ankle. Things do, ultimately, work out for the best, I think.

Thanks for everyone's support and good thoughts and prayers!
