Of course there are some dance musicians who like to tease the dancers.
E.g. Playing the rhythm straight but without a strongly accented first beat. Maybe a syncopated tune
Or with a dance like Swedish Masquerade that has a tempo change in it, playing the the parts and a different speed each time so that you never quite know what's coming.

Exhilarating if you are an experienced dancer and good listener, but at a PTA you wonder who the band are there for.
