On the nineteenth of December, in the year of eighty-one
Around the coast of Cornwall a bitter storm began.
While fishing boats they ran for port, to shelter from the storm
The Union Star was floundering, her fate was known by all.

The rugged coast of Cornwall is well known to those who sail.
Fight the sea when the gales blow, many were doomed to fail.
From Penlee Point the lifeboat came, her name was Solomon Brown.
From Mousehole came her gallant crew, eight men of high renown.

They fought and they battled as their boat was tossed around.
To save all those on the Union Star, to stop her from running aground.
They fought and they battled so, but alas, it was all in vain.
After a final call on that fateful night, they were never heard from again.

The memory of those gallant men will live for evermore.
The memory of that awful night will remain with those on shore.
Eight men who fought the raging main to save those in distress.
Now we hope their pain and suffering's gone, and their souls are now at rest.
