Subject: RE: BS: What's Better Than a Fresh Tomato
Got to admit wild strawberries beat home grown tomatoes. Only here on the Piedmont of North Carolina there is no overlap of seasons, so really no reason to compare.

Lived on a neglected cattle farm for several years where one ungrazed pasture was thick with wild strawberries for 2-3 weeks every spring. Even growing thick it took a lot of picking to get a good mess of them. I'd go out and pick a few to toss on top of our shredded wheat every morning, but the main delight was to go plant myself in the pasture with a coffee tin and gather enough a couple of times a week during their short season to make small batches of wild strawberry freezer ice cream. We used a Euell Gibbon's recipe, sweetened with honey. Much about life at that time was challenging, but I never would have known the pleasure and joy of such delights otherwise.
