The idea that to say America isn't "the greatest country in the world" is amazing and controversial is pretty hard to take in - but I suppose it actually is seen that way by a lot of people over there.

As for "everybody's too ironic and talks too fast", surely that's a bit like complaining that a cryptic crossword is cryptic. That's the fun of it, as with the West Wing. You just have to be ready to put on the subtitles, and maybe use the repeat button from time to time. And put your brain in gear. I suppose that last might be the problem for some critics. My impression is that that's what the show is essentially about.
