As Dan Milner notes above, the Scots claim "Johnny McGill" was composed by a Scots fiddler by that name, Town Piper of Girvan, however, under that title the tune is first found in 1778 in Scottish sources. The tune is in a London stage production of 1772 (The Irish Fair, and in later sources) as "Blarney Castle" and later found in Irish collections as "The Black Rogue/ Rogue Erra Duff".
