Rubbish! Most good luthiers are using recycled or renewable woods that come from responsible sources and are experimenting with new kinds of tonewoods that are from managed forests. I recently played a wonderful mahogany tenor made from an old Barclays Bank counter by Patrick James Eggle and George Lowden has made guitars from old Bushmills whiskey barrels ("very woody sound", he told me, "and an absolutely amazing smell").
